In an interview with IndieWire, Joaquin Phoenix, the Gladiator alum, explained that he’s actually not very concerned with fan expectations regarding the legendary character, the Joker, in the Batman series. According to the acclaimed actor, he doesn’t actually care if he disappoints the fans.
During a promotional tour of his latest movie, The Sister Brothers, starring John C. Reilly and Jake Gyllenhaal , the Oscar-nominated actor dished on his decision to characterize one of the greatest villains of all time.
As most fans of Batman – as well as the Joker – know, Heath Ledger’s performance of the infamous bad guy back in 2008, which garnered him a posthumous Academy Award, has gone down in history as one of the greatest characters of all time.
Eight years later, Jared Leto portrayed a different side of the Joker in 2016 in Suicide Squad, although the reaction to his character was mixed. Admittedly, however, Jared had gigantic shoes to fill.
When the reporters for IndieWire pressed him on the matter, he remarked, “I could care less. I don’t really think that much about what people think. Who cares, who cares?”
Joaquin, who is somewhat of a curmudgeon, doesn’t enjoy press tours, especially while he’s in the middle of working on a character. He said it was “ideal” for him to focus on one thing at a time.
In case you missed it, Warner Brothers announced they’re going ahead with another movie revolving around Jared Leto’s rendition of the Joker. The movie will have a very small budget, $55 million.
Joker, which includes heavy hitters like Robert De Niro and Marc Maron, will hit theaters on the 4th of October, 2019, and starts filming in September of this year.
