The Duggars hosted a Christmas bash this past weekend — but there was one member of the family who could not make the party: Derick Dillard.
The family posed for a family photo at their annual ugly Christmas sweater party on Saturday. Most the Duggars and their extended family members made the event, but the former Counting On star was nowhere in sight.
Dillard’s wife, Jill Duggar, was at the party with their son, Samuel, and appeared to have a great time. But why wasn’t Dillard at the family gathering?
According to Ok Magazine, Jessa Duggar later clarified that Derick skipped the party so that he could study for school. Dillard is currently studying law, so he might have a legitimate excuse here.
That said, Dillard reportedly has a strained relationship with the Duggars, which may have also factored into his decision to skip the party.
“They don’t like what he is doing,” a source revealed at the time. “[Jim Bob and Michelle] aren’t a fan of what he says and how he says it.”
Last year, TLC gave Dillard the boot after he made some questionable remarks on social media about Jazz Jennings, a transgender star on the network.
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar allegedly talked to Dillard about the comments, which created a rift between the families. Although they are super conservative, the Duggars did not agree with Dillard’s point of view.
The Duggar parents also missed the recent Christmas party because they are in Honduras on a missionary trip, so it’s not like Dillard would have been forced to talk to them anyway.

Whatever his reasons, Dillard has skipped family events in the past. Last month, he chose to say home while the Duggars celebrated John-David’s wedding in Oklahoma.
Jill Duggar and Dillard have been together for a number of years and share two sons: Israel and Samuel. They have not commented on the split rumors or why Dillard has been missing in action.
Derick Dillard is enrolled in the law program at the University of Arkansas.
