The friendship that Jay Z and Kanye West spans many years, way before they both blew up in the rap game and before they had wives and kids.
Despite that bond, they’ve had a contentious relationship in many ways. Reports have stated that they are in a more conflicted era of their relationship.
Certain things such as Jay Z and Beyonce skipping Kanye’s lavish wedding to Kim back in 2014, as well as supposed disses on records, even Kanye reportedly being upset that Jay Z and Beyonce’s daughter Blue, was never brought over to play with Kanye and Kim’s daughter North, have fueled some specific tension between the two rap heavyweights.
But as recently as this month, they have actually been communicating with one another. Jay Z told T: The New York Times Style Magazine that he had just spoken to Kanye “the other day” and that it’s a “complicated relationship” with the two of them.
Even after questioning Kanye’s mental state on his latest album 4:44, Kanye has publically stated that he and Jay are “brothers.”
Jay went on to say that he’s always felt like a big brother to Kanye and that the two of them admire one another’s artistry and craft tremendously. Jay does acknowledge that they’ve had their rifts that involve “a lot of other factors” but that the bond they have isn’t severed.
“In a long relationship, you know, hopefully when we’re 89 we look at this six months or whatever time and we laugh at that. There’s gonna be complications in the relationship that we have to get through,” the rapper told the magazine.
Jay Z admits that there are things that Kanye has done to him that he deemed as unacceptable and things that have made him uncomfortable.
It’s unclear what that is specifically but the supposed tension between their prospective wives, Beyonce and Kim Kardashian, may directly be a factor.
Jay Z also said that Kanye has been through so much and has such a compassionate heart but that’s what possibly gets him in trouble – “trying to help others.”
Will this friendship stand the test of time, despite all the drama?
