Janet Jackson is back in her element, but that does not mean she’s not still mourning! The singer took the stage at Essence Festival and made sure to also pay tribute to her late father Joe Jackson in front of her many fans not even two weeks after his passing.
During her emotional speech about Joe, Janet explained why she did not cancel her performance despite what happened.
‘It was really hard for me. I did not know what to do. I did not know how to move forward if I should cancel this festival or the entire tour.’
As she was talking, Janet’s voice started to shake, but she remained very strong and went on with the speech, explaining that her brother was the one who made her want to show up on stage just 11 days after their dad passed away.
‘We started to speak about my father’s strength. He was very strong, and without his drive, his strength….we wouldn’t have this success. We are a black family that came from Indiana, and we broke all kinds of records around the globe. That’s the truth.’
According to Janet, her sibling asked her what she thought Joe would want her to do and that is when she realized – ‘finish what [she’d] started.’
‘I love you so much. This one’s for you,’ she concluded pointing at the sky, nearly in tears.
