CNN’s Jake Tapper sure knows how to grab headlines. The host of “State of the Union” landed in hot water for comments he made about Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and Chelsea Manning all on the same day. On Tuesday, Mr. Tapper slammed President-elect Donald Trump for calling CNN fake news. During an appearance on NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” Tapper said that Trump has been bashing the network to change the headlines about his many scandals.
In the past few days, Trump has been engaged in an epic war with the network after one of its journalist, Jim Acosta, dared to shout questions to him during a press conference.
The reporter said: “He was obviously trying to get us to stop focusing on the story and to discredit all of us. I’ve never seen the effort to delegitimize an organization for a story you don’t like, that has been proven. Every word of the story we reported last Tuesday has been proven correct.”
The cartoonist went on to say that he believes that BuzzFeed should not have published the Trump dossier because the authenticity of the information was not confirmed.
On his show, “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” CNN’s chief Washington correspondent and his panel of political experts tackled the breaking news that President Obama has decided to commute Chelsea Manning.
Manning, who was born Bradley Edward Manning, is a transgender woman serving up to 35 years in prison for espionage. Miss Manning was convicted after she was caught leaking several million classified or unclassified documents to WikiLeaks.
Manning, who has served six years in prison, has attempted at least once to take her life. Tapper appeared baffled by Obama’s decision to free Manning because for the past eight years his administration had some choice words for figures like Manning and Edward Snowden who have been involved in espionage.
The “Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor” author said: “President Obama has used the Espionage Act to go after leakers more than every other president in history combined. This has been a hallmark of his administration.”
Tapper went on to say: “And here he is commuting the sentence of one of the most notorious leakers.”
Tapper said that he believes that Mr. Obama has data that we may not be aware of which is why he is commuting Manning. Tapper shared: “You could argue Chelsea Manning did it for a good reason, to expose war crimes, or whatever case you want to make. It certainly contradicts the last eight years of policy in terms of leaking.”
Conservative commentator Bill Kristol, who was part of the panel, said Manning’s commuting was “great news for Donald Trump” to start off because he will be forced to talk about someone else other than himself.
Manning will be free on May 17.
