When Jaden Smith was 15-years-old, he walked up to his mother and said, “Mom, I have to leave here to live my life.” And on that day, Jada Pinkett-Smith said she was absolutely heartbroken by his words. Her little boy was growing up and wanting out of the nest.
The actress and wife of Will Smith explained to her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, and her daughter, Willow, that she realized her son was right. It was time for him to embark on his own path, for the sake of self-discovery, for the sake of becoming a man.
Even though she was “devastated,” by his suggestion, she realized he was right and it had to be done. However, as time went on, Jaden changed his mind and decided to stay at home for at least a couple more years.
The Girls Trip star said that, when one lives in Hollywood, in the entertainment capital in the world, one’s experiences are in a bubble. It’s as if you’re trapped in an echo chamber where you’re never getting real-world feedback from people who can be honest with you.
When one is a Hollywood celebrity, it’s easy to surround oneself with sycophants and “yes-men,” who will say whatever they have to for the purposes of personal connections and their own success and self-interests.
Jada remarked, “I knew what having my freedom outside the bubble, what I gained from that.” Essentially, her epiphany was that her son needed to go, and the sooner she let him be on his own, the sooner he came back.
And back in 2013 during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she said that her son explained that he no longer wanted to leave. Previously, Jaden’s father, Will Smith, joked that none of his kids would ever get emancipation, ever.
“No emancipation for the Smith kids,” the rapper/actor remarked. As the world knows, Will and Jada got married back in 1997, and have been together ever since. Will even has another son named, Trey, who is 25-years-old from a previous marriage, but no one knows where he is or what he’s up to.
