Following the news that Meghan Markle’s father has undergone heart surgery and will no longer be able to attend her wedding to Prince Harry, we have finally learned who will walk her down the aisle in his absence! Today, Kensington Palace revealed that the one taking over Thomas Markle’s role is none other than Prince Charles, Harry’s dad!
‘Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St George’s Chapel on her Wedding Day. The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle to The Royal Family in this way,’ the official statement read.
CNN has reported that the Suits actress is set to start her bridal procession without an escort at first.
Then, her bridesmaids and page boys will follow before finally, Prince Charles will be accompanying her as soon as she reaches the Quire – an area where the main guests of the royal wedding are to be seated.
Breaking tradition, the father-in-law will not be ‘giving her away.’
Instead, Prince Charles will be walking her to the very foot of the altar and stand back as she approaches her groom all by herself.
For the past few days, many have been speculating on who would be the one walking Meghan down the aisle in her dad’s stead.
On Saturday, the man told TMZ that he has no choice but skip his daughter’s special day due to his health problems worsening.
On Wednesday morning, the man underwent heart surgery after experiencing a heart attack a couple of weeks before.
Meghan herself released a statement about her dad’s absence, saying: ‘Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I’ve always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health. I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday.’
