While Issa Rae has carved out a successful career for herself as a singer and actress, she still has time to appreciate her roots, and the other artists who inspired her to work toward who she is today. However, meeting her favorite artists don’t always go as planned, as she recently revealed on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
According to the star, when she was at the Met Gala this year, she “ruined” the opportunity she had to make friends with the beloved singer. After noticing Riri sitting down at a table, Issa said, she went over to her to say hi following a couple of drinks and “you know, tapped her.”
She was flabbergasted by Rihanna’s vibe, which was “so friendly and nice,” and she really wasn’t expecting it. Rihanna said to her, “Hey girl, good to see you!” and Issa fumbled the interaction and ended up walking away.
Check out the video of her telling the story below:
According to Rae, she “ruined it with (her) drunken nervousness, starstruck-ness.”
Even though the beginning stages of her relationship with Rihanna didn’t pan out as she had hoped, they might have a chance to rectify the situation.
Reportedly, Rae is writing a script for a heist movie, inspired by a picture popularized on Twitter, which will star Lupita Nyong’O, Rihanna, and Issa.
Rae, 33, while not being quite as iconic as Rihanna, still has a fruitful career as a singer, an actress, a writer, a director, and a producer. Thus far, she has received two Golden Globe nomination as well as a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
Unfortunately, she hasn’t won yet, but no one knows what the future holds. These days, Issa has been working on a web-series ever since 2011, which features stories created by people of color.
