Thanks to a group text chain from the cast of The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder’s phone has been blowing up, so the actor had to politely remove himself, so the buzzing wouldn’t wake his 1-year-old daughter, Bodhi. Somerhalder wants to keep up with his former co-stars, but with him being a new dad, and everyone living in various time zones, some texts came at inconvenient times.
“It was such a big group,” the Los Angeles-based Somerhalder explained. “My phone is blowing up like crazy because he [Paul Wesley, who is currently in Paris] wants to send a smiley emoji to all seven of us.”

Us Weekly reports that Somerhalder always keeps his phone nearby in case of emergency, and parents don’t have the luxury of turning their phone off. But since the group texts were causing his phone to constantly ping and vibrate, Somerhalder told his former castmates that he had “bow out,” and now he talks and chats with each one individually.
Somerhalder and his wife, Twilight actress Nikki Reed, also have three dogs, three cats, and a few horses, and they have partnered with Royal Canin for National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day on August 22nd. Somerhalder says that his experience with animals has helped him be a better dad.
He explains that he has held multiple cats and dogs during storms and on airplanes, and he has learned how to make scared animals feel safe and secure. And now, as a parent, he is doing that with his “human baby.”
Being a dad- it’s the best role I’ve ever gotten to play. The only one I’ve ever been good at… Happy late(ish) Father’s Day dads. I hope we can all remember that society is a direct reflection of our parenting. So, whatever we can do to step it up and really double down by investing in our kids, teaching them and being present with them; our world will be truly better. I know it’s hard out there but we can do this-I’m proud to one of you now…
Royal Canin’s annual campaign is something that Somerhalder is very passionate about because cats aren’t getting to the vet as much as dogs. He says that one cat for every five dogs goes to the vet, and that isn’t good.
He continued by explaining that there are 10 million more cats in the United States than dogs, so he, his wife, and the animal charity are encouraging people to make vet appointments for their cats.
As for his daughter, Bodhi recently turned one year old, and Somerhalder and Reed have been very protective of her since her birth. During their first year of parenthood, the couple has only shared a photo of Bodhi’s toes on social media.
They do, however, occasionally take the time to write sweet messages to each other. Not long after welcoming their daughter, Somerhalder posted on Instagram about Reed’s Fit Pregnancy and Baby magazine cover, writing that she is a beautiful wife and amazing mom who he is proud of.
He added that Reed brought so much fun and power into their lives during her pregnancy that she “literally brought the word sexy into pregnancy.” He also thanked her for being his partner in life and for inspiring him.
And this past June, for his first Father’s Day, Somerhalder marked the occasion by writing on Instagram that being a dad is the best role he has ever gotten to play. And, he hoped all fathers remembered that society is a direct reflection of parenting. So, we should invest in our kids, teach them, and be present with them because that will make the world a better place.
