Good news for Dr. House’s fans: Hugh Laurie returns! Though you can’t really say that he’s making a comeback on TV, since the new show called Chance will be streaming on Hulu, it’s still great that we get to see him acting again. The new production is a series of melancholy and suspense where he’s playing a doctor again. However, this doctor is quite different than Dr. House; he is an American, he’s called Eldon Chance and is a neuropsychiatrist living in San Francisco.
Chance apparently starts to have feelings for one of his patients, called Jaclyn Blackstone (character played by Gretchen Mol). Though people get the chance to see many patients treated by Chance, we have to agree that Mol is really different. She has a split personality and she’s married to an abusive policeman.
The theme of the series seems to be the crisis through which the doctor is going through. Not that different from Dr. House, right? However, his problems aren’t limited only to the person he gets attached to, but he is also arguing with his ex-wife, played by Diane Farr. Though the character of his ex-wife doesn’t appear too much in the show, we still see that he is having some financial problems related to her.
On top of all that, he is also depressed, has a problem with alcohol and fears that he’s not working well with his patients. Moreover, he is more and more attracted to Blackstone, and their relationship is bound to overcome any limits.
The new series is based on a novel written by Kem Nunn, who has also worked on Sons of Anarchy and John from Cincinnati. The show does have a Hitchcock-ish feel, but it is still quite melodramatic, thing that is visible from some of the lines the main character uses.
