Mayans MC, Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy spin-off, has been another ratings hit for FX. Part of that success, of course, is due to the popularity of the original show, and Mayans MC has not been shy about referencing it. From secret cameos to hidden Easter eggs, here are all of the ways Mayans has referenced SOA so far.
The first scene in Sons of Anarchy shows a crow eating food on the side of the road while Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) rumbles by on his Harley. On Mayans, the opener shows a stray dog eating a dead crow as the spin-off’s main character, EZ Reyes (JD Pardo), rides right through the bird.
The first episode of Mayans featured quite a few SOA cameos, but none was more surprising than seeing Katey Sagal back in action as Gemma Teller-Morrow. While Gemma was only featured in a flashback, Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) will be playing an important role in Mayans moving forward. We also got to see Sons of Anarchy charter president Les Packer (Robert Patrick) back in action, which means similar cameos could be in the works.
In Season 4 of Sons of Anarchy, Jax and his club started working with the Galindo cartel. They handed off the business at the end of Season 7 and we discovered in the first episode that the Mayans are still in the trade. Only this time, Miguel Galindo (Danny Pino) is running the family business and is looking to stir up some trouble.
Chucky Is Back
The second episode of Mayans MC saw the return of a beloved character from the original show. With the series picking up three years after the events in SOA, Chucky (Michael Ornstein) is now doing the financials for the Mayans – and fans couldn’t be happier about it.
While fans picked up most of these references to the original show, Sutter slipped in an Easter egg that a lot of people missed. In the third episode, a DEA agent gives EZ’s dad his phone number just in case he wants to turn on the club. If you call the number, you get an interesting voice mail from Gemma Teller.
“Hi, you’ve reached the Teller-Morrow Garage,” the message says. “Nobody’s here to take your call — because we’re all f**king dead.”
