Hillary Clinton had to do it again, and the whole world was watching her every move. On Friday, the woman, who spent most of her life preparing and working hard to become the first American female president, looked at the train of history leave the station. Her face told the story of the painful moment, and some of her supporters still cannot believe that all of this is real. A reality star with a massive ego named Donald Trump is the 45th president of the greatest country on Earth.
The inauguration was expected to be a tough moment for the former senator from New York, but things got worse pretty quickly as some people in the crowd could not help chant “lock her up.” The rallying cry of Mr. Trump’s campaign came back on the worst day of Mrs. Clinton’s political career.
To add insult to injury, the real estate mogul decided not to shake her hand during the ceremony. It is unclear that all of this was planned. The failed presidential candidate did exchange a few words with Mike Pence, the new vice president.
However, during the inaugural lunch inside the Capitol building, the former rivals were able to share an awkward handshake. Clinton could have avoided this form of public humiliation by skipping the inauguration like some elected officials in the Democratic Party did, but her sense of patriotism got the best of her.
And just like in 2009, she had to play a minor part in history as her opponent got the lead role. But, this time, there were no smiles because Trump is no Barack Obama. Deep inside, she probably knows that there will be no sequel, unlike eight years ago.
