2017 is the year of change for the actress, Taraji P. Henson. We’ve seen her in several different haircuts, and now, she’s claiming she won’t straighten it ever again. In an interview with Extra, the star of Empire revealed that “that’s the only time I allowed him (her stylist) to straighten my hair. I’m not straightening my hair again.”
She explained it’s not good for your hair to straighten it all of the time. In June of this year, when Henson made the first significant change to her short hair we see now, the Academy Award-nominated actress said, “if we’re going to cut it, we’re going to cut it all.”
Taraji isn’t the only black performer and public figure to let their natural hair flow. In April, former First Lady Michelle Obama rocked her hair in its natural curls opposed to the way she usually has it.
Not long after, the internet was beyond proud, as one Twitter user wrote, “Michelle Obama wearing her natural hair makes me smile inside.” Due to the response Obama got for sporting her unmodified hairdo; it looks like Henson is following along the same path.
In other news, many women claim that they are “punished” for their natural hairstyles during job interviews and the like.
Political activists hold the argument that society accepts only certain kinds of hair and usually it isn’t a black woman’s style of hair. Perhaps Obama and Henson are using their hair as a political statement? Whether or not that point of contention is correct, we’re glad that such a stunning woman like Henson is keeping it real!
