John Mayer sat down with Zane Lowe from Beats 1 and Apple Music recently and talked about his career, Kanye West, Shawn Mendes, as well as what it’s like to get older in an industry where the youth are glorified. During the chat, John said that Shawn was “a lot like me” in many ways.
The rock-star joked that Shawn is an updated version of himself as if John was merely a “beta version” of a celebrity, and Shawn is the replacement.
Mayer added, “He’s a better version without the weird software viruses.” According to John, now that he’s in his 40’s, he’s moved on from a particular type of ambition.
Additionally, the guitar player talked about what it was like to meet Kanye West for the very first time. Mayer said the first time they ever chatted, was when Kanye was coming up with the song, “Gold Digger,” and at that point, it was in its pre-production phase.
Mayer said the Yeezy designer rapped along to it freestyle and it was “perfect.” However, he admitted that he doesn’t know Kanye that well, but his skills were tremendous, and that much was self-evident.
And when someone has that creative edge, it doesn’t merely go away one day. In other words, John thinks he’s still got the flow, the ability to continue coming out with great music.
Moreover, when it comes to getting older, John explained that one of the best things is understanding that people’s opinions on things disappear after a certain period of time.
An experienced and wise man knows not to take things as personally because everything fades as the years go by. According to the “Your Body Is A Wonderland” singer, he’s no longer concerned with coming out with a huge record. It’s more about releasing music he thinks is good.
