When a massively popular book gets turned into a TV show with movie stars and amazing direction, you may have a bonafide hit on your hands. This is essentially what happened to the runaway classic Big Little Lies that debuted on HBO last year to much fanfare.
After racking up countless award nominations and wins, for acting, ensemble cast and show, there was a collective effort made to turn the miniseries into a television show with a second season.
All the main actresses signed on for another season – Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz – while Witherspoon and Kidman will also be acting as executive producers.
Some of the most exciting news coming out of this new season was reports that acting powerhouse Meryl Streep would be joining the cast.
As one of the most highly regarded and decorated actresses in the entertainment business, it is quite the accomplishment for a cable show to land her for a role.
Just this morning, Kidman posted a picture of Streep on set. Streep will play the mother of the late Perry Wright, the husband of Kidman’s character, Mary Louise Wright.
A part that has been written specifically for her. The character arrives in Monterey seeking answers about the unexpected death of her son.
Witherspoon recently described her reaction when she learned that Streep agreed to play the part. Streep emailed her and Kidman and said she loved it and wanted to come on board.
Witherspoon says she immediately called Kidman in hysterical excitement and kept repeating how she couldn’t believe she was getting to work with Meryl Streep.
This reaction is completely in line with how most of Hollywood feels about Streep, her compelling, massive acting ability, and her four-decade career.
Witherspoon even told David E. Kelly, the head writer on the show: “You better write me good scenes with Meryl Streep!”
Filming has just begun in Monterey for the second season, however, the finished product won’t be coming to HBO until sometime in 2019.
So we’ll all have to wait awhile to see these powerful, enigmatic women on the small screen.
