“Did I do that?” Jaleel White, who played the character Steve Urkel on Family Matters coined the catchphrase that ruled for nearly a decade turns 41-years-old on November 27, 2017. Also known as J. White, Jaleel has gone on to land numerous television and movie roles including the voice of Sonic for the TV series Sonic Underground and playing the role of Darryl in Me, Myself, and I. A former child actor, Jaleel White got his start doing television commercials at three-years-old. When he was eight, he landed his first television role with a guest appearance on The Jeffersons.
Though Jaleel White had been working steadily it wasn’t until Family Matters that he became a household name. Interestingly, Steve Urkel was written to be a one-time character. The reception to Urkel’s nerdiness was such a huge hit with fans, that he was written into the series.
Family Matters ran from 1989 until 1998.

Jaleel White was 13-years-old when he landed the role of Steve Urkel which he played until he was 22-years-old. White essentially grew before the public’s eyes on T.G.I.F., and like many child actors, he was faced with challenges once the series ended.
It can be difficult for actors who are typecast or known for one character to break into other roles. Fortunately for White, he continued to land other parts, even though it took some fans to accept White as any character besides Steve Urkel.
In 2010, White returned with a series he wrote, starred in and executive produced: Fake It Till You Make It. White has a number of projects in the works.
Jaleel White continues to be a popular figure and Steve Urkel will forever be remembered as an American icon.
