Gwyneth Paltrow will soon be tying the knot with Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk, but in a recent interview with Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show, the Goop founder talked about her previous high-profile relationships with Ben Affleck and Brad Pitt and how they affected her and her life. She revealed that Pitt – her former fiancé – defended her when Harvey Weinstein allegedly sexually harassed her. And, as for Affleck, dating him helped her heal.
Paltrow and Affleck had an on-again, off-again relationship from 1997 to 2000, and at one point things were serious enough that she thanked him during her Oscar speech when she won for her performance in Shakespeare in Love, a film that they starred in together. They worked together again when they later made the forgettable film Bounce.

Stern then asked why she never married Affleck and wondered if she was ever in love with him.
“It’s interesting,” Paltrow said. “I think there’s certain boyfriends where you are trying to work stuff out, right? Like, you’re trying to heal certain stuff from your childhood, and he was very much a lesson in that way. I’m not sure exactly what I was trying to heal in that instance, but it was…he was, you know, it was specific.”
In previous interviews with Stern, Paltrow has admitted that Affleck wasn’t in a good place in his life for him to have a girlfriend. And, even though he is talented and funny, it was best that they parted ways. And, apparently, her parents agreed. She says that they loved him, but they were okay with them breaking up.
“He said if you ever make her feel uncomfortable again, I’ll kill you."

After the split, Paltrow ended up dating Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who she ended up marrying and having two kids with. They were together for over a decade before divorcing in 2016. Affleck moved on with Jennifer Lopez, but that relationship didn’t last long. He eventually found a bit of happiness with Jennifer Garner, and they married and had three children. But, they split in 2015 and eventually divorced.
Gwyneth Paltrow has nothing but best wishes for Ben Affleck and hopes that one day he can find happiness. She says that he makes life tough for himself, and he has a lot of complications. But, he is a great guy, and she hopes he eventually “sorts himself out.”
