Maisie Williams has officially ended her run on Game of Thrones. The actress, who plays Arya Stark on HBO’s hit fantasy drama, recently opened up about wrapping up her final scenes for Season 8. While Williams did not reveal any spoilers about her character’s fate, her goodbye appears to have been a fairly bloody affair.
The actress told The Guardian that Arya’s ending is “beautiful.”
“I ended on the perfect scene,” she said. “I was alone –- shocker! Arya’s always bloody alone. But I was alone, and I had watched a lot of other people wrap. I knew the drill, I had seen the tears and heard the speeches.”
After taping her final scene, the actress shared a photo of a pair of blood-soaked shoes on social media to mark the end of her time on the set of Game of Thrones. “Goodbye belfast. goodbye arya. goodbye game of thrones. what a joy i’ve had. here’s to the adventures to come,” she wrote alongside the pic, adding a “lastwomanstanding” hashtag.
The hashtag Williams used has already sparked a lot of speculation about her character’s fate. Although fans might suspect the worse for the other female characters, it is entirely possible that Williams — who is usually careful about leaking spoilers — was simply noting that she is the last woman cast member to shoot a scene.
The bloody shoes, however, are another matter.
Williams has been a part of the show since she was 12 years old. Over the past 8 seasons, the actress has grown into a fan favorite and has nabbed a few Emmy nominations along the way. She has also used her fame to launch a movie career in Hollywood. Williams is slated to appear in the upcoming X-Men spin-off, The New Mutants, where she will play the part of Wolfsbane.
HBO has not announced an official premiere date for the new season of Game of Thrones, though it is expected to air sometime in 2019. The network has, however, agreed to move forward with a prequel that is expected to kick off as soon as the original series is over.
