We are still months away from the premiere of Season 8 of Game of Thrones, but that hasn’t stopped fans from coming up with new theories by the day. In the latest fan theory, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) betrays Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) for the sake of his own family and sister, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), who is still on the Iron Throne in King’s Landing. What are the chances that Daenerys is betrayed by her closest advisor?
The theory is based on how Tyrion has acted in previous seasons. Before becoming Daenerys’ trusted advisor, Tyrion proved that he was just as cunning and manipulative as anyone in King’s Landing.
This is illustrated in a conversation Tyrion had with Varys (Conleth Hill) a few seasons back, a conversation that convinced some fans he is capable of betrayal.

The scene in question starts with Varys subtly threatening Tyrion by targeting his lover, Shae (Sibel Kekilli). “I’m not Ned Stark, I understand the way this game is played,” Tyrion tells Varys. “Ned Stark was a man of honor.” Varys responds, to which Tyrion fires back, “And I am not.”
The scene does make it sounds like Tyrion is capable of anything, but not everyone is convinced he’ll betray Daenerys. According to Express, a lot of fans do not agree with the theory and cannot picture Tyrion betraying Daenerys for his sister.
After all, even Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) gave up on Cersei in the Season 7 finale. Further, Daenerys has been very good to Tyrion over the past few seasons and has given him no reason to betray her.

There is a chance, however, that Tyrion betrays Daenerys for something else entirely. It is possible that he backstabs Daenerys in order to bring honor to his family and extend the Lannister legacy. It is true that Tyrion despised his father, but he has admitted on multiple occasions that he is a true Lannister at heart. If he still thinks the Lannisters should rule Westeros, then betraying Daenerys isn’t out of the question.
That said, a lot of things would have to fall into place before Tyrion makes a move. At the front of the list is the war with the Night King. If Daenerys makes it out alive and defeats the White Walkers, then Tyrion would have to deal with her lover, Jon Snow (Kit Harington), who is also a frontrunner for taking the Iron Throne in the Season 8 finale.
Season 8 of Game of Thrones is scheduled to premiere in 2019.
