Comic-Con 2018 is not going to look the same this year. HBO has announced that Game of Thrones and Westworld will not be attending, and Marvel will also be skipping the event for the first time in three years. So, what can fans expect to see this year at the San Diego Convention Center?
According to Deadline, this year Hall H will most likely feature The Walking Dead and its spinoff Fear The Walking Dead, and the spotlight could also turn to newer series like Syfy’s Nightflyers – which is based on a George R. R. Martin novella – and Deadly Class.
HBO said in a statement that Game of Thrones and Westworld wouldn’t appear this year because of scheduling conflicts.
So…no Marvel. No Game of Thrones. No WestWorld at Comic Con?? DC this is your chance, bring your A game! Aquaman cast and footage! Shazam sneak peak and cast! Tease Wonder Woman 2. I know DC is great, here’s your chance to shine! #SDCC2018 #AQUAMAN #shazam #wonderwoman

“Due to production schedules and air dates for Game of Thrones and Westworld, these series will not be presented at San Diego Comic-Con this summer,” the cable network said. “HBO has a longstanding relationship with SDCC, and we are very grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic response over the years. We look forward to returning in the future.”
HBO will actually not have any presence at all during this year’s event that takes place between July 19 and July 22, which means the Game of Thrones prequel that the network recently ordered will also be absent.
Both GOT and Westworld are big fan favorites, and the news that they will be missing out this year is definitely disappointing. The final GOT season premieres next year, while HBO just picked up Westworld for season three. It is currently in the middle of season two, with the finale scheduled for June 24th.
As for Marvel, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, confirmed that they would not be attending during the Avengers: Infinity War press junket. One of the reasons they have decided to pass on this year is because the studio will not be announcing any post-Avengers 4 movies until after they release Avengers 4 in May 2019.
the real reason marvel decided to skip comic con this year is because they know anything would be underwhelming after last year's thor ragnarok & black panther panel pic.twitter.com/Cu6MAzBEyU

This is a different approach for Marvel compared to years past. In 2014, Feige didn’t even wait for Comic-Con to announce just about every phase 3 movie. They have also had big SDCC moments, including the first appearance of the cast of The Avengers and Tom Hiddleston going full Loki.
We do know that the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will come out after Avengers 4. And, it doesn’t seem possible that Marvel will be able to keep everything a secret for another year.
The rumor is that Feige may be ready to step down after ten years as President and will be letting the next guy figure out the next series of films. Or, they could just be waiting for things to return to normal after the Fox and Disney merger.
The final season of Game of Thrones is set to premiere in 2019.
