If you’re a fan of Freeform’s family drama series, The Fosters, I have some good news and I have some bad news. The bad news is that the popular show will be ending after an upcoming three-episode season, but the good news is that a new spin-off is in the works featuring stars Cierra Ramirez and Maia Mitchell.
The three-episode finale event will air next summer and will serve as both an end to that show’s storylines while simultaneously setting up the new spin-off.
The new show has already been greenlit for a 13-episode first season, which will jump several years into the future as Mitchell and Ramirez’s characters begin “the next phase of their young adult lives.”
It’s also being reported that at least one other young cast member from The Fosters may be a main character on the spin-off, but nothing is set in stone just yet.
On the new show, sisters Callie and Mariana will have moved to Los Angeles, with Callie continuing her social work and Mariana taking a job in the technology sector.
While the younger characters will be taking center stage, the new untitled series will continue to have strong ties to The Fosters and its characters.
Freeform executive Karey Burke says the network plans to have guest appearances from all the major characters from The Fosters, including parents Sherri Saum and Teri Polo.
The Fosters recently finishing filming its fifth season, including the show’s two-hour 100th episode, which will air as the upcoming season finale.
The show’s creators say jumping forward in time and focusing on the younger members of the family seemed like the logical next step in the storyline but they had to convince the network to move forward with the plan. The Fosters will return with the last 10 episodes of Season 5 beginning January 9 at 9/8c on Freeform.
