Former Senator in the state of Massachusetts, Brian Joyce, took over $1 million in bribes including 704 pounds of free Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. The 102-page document as obtained by People Magazine and the Associated Press revealed that the politician took bribes from several organizations and enterprises.
Joyce, who served as a Democratic legislator, took bribes from many individuals and attempted to launder the money through his law firms. The senator tried to make the funds look like legal fees according to the Associated Press.
On Friday morning, police arrested Joyce at his home, and they charged him with racketeering, extortion, wire fraud, as well as money laundering.
The politician pleaded not guilty in the federal courthouse on Friday. According to emails as obtained by the Associated Press, Joyce requested coffee – “no decaf” – in his emails and asked for “K” cups at his office. Clearly, his arrogance must’ve got the best of him if he was so bold to ask for specific types of cups.
The senator allegedly got the coffee from a franchise owner. Additionally, Brian took a Jeep worth around $35,000 as well as “monetary kickbacks” from several unnamed companies.
The head of the Boston FBI Office said that they believe Mr. Joyce was “greedy” and that’s pretty much it; “plain and simple.”
And while many politicians have been involved with nefarious scandals in the past, it appears as though Joyce became careless.
To request over 700 pounds of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee suggests how far gone he really was. Curiously enough, none of his employee’s, assistants, or co-workers were named in any of his crimes. Perhaps, he acted alone.
