Chip and Joanna Gaines are not having a good week. After being hit with a $40,000 fine from the Environmental Protection Agency for improperly removing lead paint on Fixer Upper, the couple’s Silos Bakery Co. was written up for failing to meet health inspections.
This week, Chip and Joanna released a statement regarding the EPA fine. The pair confirmed that they were penalized by the agency for not following protocol in the removal of lead paint from 33 different properties.
The Fixer Upper stars were forced to pay a whopping $40,000 for breaking the rules. They also displayed the proper techniques for removing lead paint during an episode on Fixer Upper this season.
“We continue to be proactive with our efforts to ensure total compliance moving forward, and remain committed to raising awareness in our community and our industry,” the pair explained in the statement.
In addition to paying the hefty fine, Chip and Joanna agreed to donate $160,000 to a program in Waco that helps remove lead paint from households with children. Their company has also initiated a management program with their employees to ensure that the proper steps are taken whenever they remove lead paint from properties. Taken together, it is clear that the couple took the violations seriously and are doing whatever it takes to prevent repeating their mistakes.
Unfortunately for Chip and Joanna, their troubles didn’t end there.
According to Radar Online, Chip and Joanna’s bakery in Waco was just written up for three health violations. The establishment did not properly label, use and put away toxic chemicals. The main violation was not labeling a cleaning spray bottle.
The bakery corrected its mistakes during the inspection and did receive a permit renewal for this year. The health code violation comes amid criticisms of the couple’s other businesses in Waco and the surrounding area.
A few months ago, employees bashed Chip and Joanna for not visiting their establishments in Waco, and for coming across as unfriendly owners. That said, the pair has a lot on their plate at the moment.
Apart from all the businesses they operate, Chip and Joanna Gaines are getting ready for the birth of another child this fall. They are also dealing with the end of Fixer Upper and figuring out what they want to tackle next. Here’s to hoping they get everything lined up and can avoid any more embarrassing moments in the near future.
