Chip and Joanna Gaines’ legal battle with the United States Environmental Protection Agency is finally over. The Fixer Upper stars did not properly remove lead paint on several of their renovations and paid a heavy price for the mistake.
The EPA looked at all of the times Chip and Joanna removed lead paint from a house on the show and discovered improper procedures on 33 different occasions. The agency cited the couple’s company, Magnolia Homes, for failing to exhibit safe lead removal practices, including not covering vents and floors with plastic to catch lead chips.
The rules are in place to help minimize problems associated with lead exposure and the EPA takes it very seriously whenever contractors break the rules.
According to People, Chip and Joanna were forced to pay a fine of $40,000 for not properly removing lead paint on their show. They also agreed to display the proper way to remove lead paint during an episode on Fixer Upper.
The episode was featured in the couple’s final season and aired earlier this year. The two also donated over $160,000 to a program that helps remove lead paint from homes in Waco, Texas. The program focuses on households that have children and is a great way for the pair to give back to their community.
Shortly after the ruling, the couple released a statement through a company spokesperson. The statement confirmed that the EPA had fined Magnolia Homes and outlined all the ways the company changed their policies towards lead-paint removal. This includes creating a program within their company that ensures staff members and contractors properly remove lead-based paint from homes.
“We continue to be proactive with our efforts to ensure total compliance moving forward and remain committed to raising awareness in our community and our industry,” the statement concluded.
Fines aside, Chip and Joanna seem to be enjoying their time away from the spotlight. Last week, Chip celebrated the couple’s 15th wedding anniversary with an adorable poem to his wife on Twitter.
The two originally met at an auto shop owned by her dad and the rest is history. The Fixer Upper stars currently share four children — Drake, Ella, Duke, and Emmie Kay — and are expecting one more. Last September, Chip and Joanna revealed that they are going to have another boy this year.
Chip and Joanna Gaines’ final season of Fixer Upper wrapped up back in April.
