Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines got some surprising news just six weeks after they decided to end their popular reality show after season five — Joanna was expecting the couple’s fifth child. She was 40 years old when she gave birth to baby Crew on June 21st, and Joanna says that this pregnancy was different from her first four.
“I have always really enjoyed being because pregnant — I tend to feel my best during those nine months,” reveals Joanna in the fall issue of The Magnolia Journal. “This time I felt a little more worn out than usual. I heard the phrase ‘geriatric pregnancy’ for the first time when I was about six weeks in, and I laughed until I realized that’s actually what it’s called at my age.”
Chip and Joanna were already the parents of 13-year-old Drake, 11-year-old Ella, 9-year-old Duke and 8-year-old Emmie when they found out that their son Crew was on his way. And Joanna says that she never thought she would wear maternity jeans ever again.
She says that she and Chip would joke about having another baby, but she truly believed that she was done. But now Joanna has a newborn in her arms, and she feels like a first-time mom again since it has been eight years since her last pregnancy.
In her essay for the magazine titled “Made For This,” Joanna pointed out that she had her first four kids very close together. She says that it was a time in her life when money and sleep were scarce, and she greeted each baby with a mixture of uncertainty, exhaustion, excitement, and awe. But this time, she was much more comfortable.
Joanna has also surrounded herself with people who are strong where she is weak, and they lend a hand when she needs help. She added that since Crew arrived, she has a new understanding of the phrase “it takes a village.”
She admits that the timing of the pregnancy actually lined up perfectly with her and Chip’s decision to take some time off after ending Fixer Upper. Joanna says that it is sweet how, in predictable ways, we get exactly what we need for an exact moment in time.
The mom-of-five also says that baby Crew wasn’t something she could have anticipated, but being pregnant and “forced to slow down” was a gift.
