Although there are exceptions, most Star Wars fans would prefer to forget about creator George Lucas’ 1999-2005 prequel trilogy. One bright spot among those films, though, is fans’ acceptance of actor Ewan McGregor as the young Obi-Wan Kenobi, and now McGregor might just get the chance to play the role again.
In August, reports surfaced that Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry was in talks to write and direct a new spinoff movie focusing on Obi-Wan.
There’s been little news about the project in the months since, but it’s presumably still in the works; the big question is whether McGregor would return to play the character again.
Over the weekend, P90X founder Tony Horton shared a photo of McGregor working out with a very familiar-looking beard, leading to speculation that he may be getting in shape to return to “a galaxy far, far away.”

Last night, McGregor was asked about the new film at the Golden Globes ceremony (where he took home a “Best Actor” trophy for his work on the FX series, Fargo).
“There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do,” McGregor told reporters.
It’s entirely possible that McGregor is truly in the dark about the Obi-Wan spinoff, but it’s worth noting that he’s still sporting that familiar beard.
The next Star Wars film to hit theaters is another spinoff focusing on a popular character: Solo: A Star Wars Story with Alden Ehrenreich playing smuggler Han Solo.
After that, we’ll see the follow-up to Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2019 and that film’s writer/director, Rian Johnson, is currently working on an entire new trilogy of films set outside of the characters and locales we know from the existing films. That leaves the potential for the Obi-Wan film to begin production soon for release in 2020, meaning we should know very soon if McGregor will be suiting up once again.
