Game of Thrones and Solo star Emilia Clarke just dropped a major bomb about the Fifty Shades franchise.
Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson shot to fame by portraying Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the popular Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. But, if producers would have had their way, two other actors would have had the coveted roles.
We are familiar with the fact that Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam walked away from the role of Christian Grey because of scheduling issues. But now, Game of Thrones star Clarke reveals that she turned down the chance to play Anastasia Steele because she feared that she just couldn’t cope with the pressure.
The actress insists that her decision to exit the project had nothing to do with the nudity and sex scenes that the part required – she has bared all multiple times on GOT. She just knew that the film adaptations of the E.L. James erotic novels were going to be a big deal.
“It genuinely wasn’t a nudity thing,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I just knew the enormity of what that was… and I just didn’t think I could take that.”
Clarke also said that she has often struggled to talk about her nudity in the HBO series, and the volume of interest in her taking off her clothes “is astonishing” to her. She says that she never went on stage and told everyone to check out her breasts, it just didn’t happen that way. She took on a character, and that character had things happen to her.
The actress says that it is something that people ask her more than any other question, and it is genuinely something that she finds difficult to handle.
As for Hunnam, the required nudity in Fifty Shades wasn’t an issue for him, either. And, having to give up the role of Christian Grey because of scheduling issues ended up taking its toll. He said it was the most emotionally destructive and difficult thing he has ever had to deal with professionally, and it was a heartbreaking experience.
But, Hunnam had already given his word to his friend Guillermo del Toro that he would be in his movie Crimson Peak, and he still had to film the final season of Sons of Anarchy. And, since he is a man of his word and prides himself on being a professional, he had to call Fifty Shades director Sam Taylor-Johnson and tell her it just wasn’t going to work out.
Meanwhile, Clarke – who appears in the new movie Solo – revealed that she has signed on for multiple films in the Star Wars franchise, but she isn’t sure she will actually make another appearance as Qi’ra. With a smile, she explained that she thinks it might be an insurance thing.
Emilia Clarke returns for one last round as Daenerys Targaryen in the final season of Game of Thrones in 2019.
