According to reports, Elmarie Wendel, who portrayed Mrs. Mamie Dubceck on 3rd Rock From The Sun, passed away at the age of 89. Her daughter, JC, confirmed her mother had died, saying in a statement that her mother was a “great mom and a bada*s dame.”
Wendel was born in a small farming community in Howard County, Iowa, raised in a family of five siblings, and spent a good portion of her childhood moving around with her parents who were singers and dancers.
Wendel and her sisters drove around with their parents, performing in small venues, including the Grand Ole Opry. After she went to New York City, she won success on Broadway and in other productions as well.
When she left New York City for Los Angeles, she made a successful transition into film and television, finally landing a role as Mrs. Dubcek on 3rd Rock From The Sun, which aired for five years before its cancelation in 2001.
And that wasn’t the end of her career either. She also appeared in Seinfeld, Love, And War, Murder, She Wrote, Murphy Brown, and Empty Nest. And she also performed in And The Band Played On And Far From Home.
Wendel’s performance as Mrs. Dubcek was just one part praised as a part of the cast of 3rd Rock From The Sun, the series which aired from 1996 until 2001.
The series, beginning on NBC over twenty years ago, was about four aliens who were on a trip to Earth, a planet they look at with contempt and disinterest. They pretend to be a human family as a way of observing their behavior.
Since the show finished, it has become somewhat of a cult TV series, with later film and television series referencing it. Interestingly, the TV series featured Joseph Gordon-Levitt when he was just a young boy.
