You probably remember that back in August 2017, Texas got hit by Hurricane Harvey. The town’s high school gym ended up destroyed completely.
In yesterday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres show, the volleyball team from the high school opened up about how they were able to overcome the horrific aftermath, also discussing what the gym meant to them.
‘The moment I realized how bad it was when we got pictures of our gym and it was just everywhere,’ one of the kids explained while crying. ‘It was like a second home for us, and to see it destroyed was so devastating.’
When Ellen heard the sad story, she definitely knew that she had to do something to help the high school.
Ellen teamed up with Lowe’s and donated $1 million to help rebuild Rockport-Fulton’s beloved Gold Gym.
Despite the horrible aftermath, the team and their local community got together and found a way to still have a volleyball season this year.
‘You always have a choice to make the best out of a situation,’ said one athlete. ‘Having that positive mindset and wanting to make it better is really what got us through Harvey.’
Ellen was totally blown away by the kids’ commitment to their school.
‘I know that your gym was more than just a gym to all of you,’ Ellen stated. ‘It was important to your entire community.’
Congratulations, Ellen, for always doing everything in your power to help the ones who need it!
