Drake has been in the business for years now and he’s continuing to bring fresh and clever takes on music, his lyrics and visual artistry.
After recently dropping the video for “God’s Plan” which gained much attention and praise as the rapper went around Miami giving away nearly a million dollars to different people, he’s back again with a video praising the incredible, multifaceted women in the world.
A number of familiar faces make cameos throughout the video as powerful women in their craft and field.
The first cameo is actress Olivia Wilde who poses and moves confidently around a gorgeous room framed with an immaculate staircase.
Next is the first black ballerina Misty Copeland who’s stunning body and utter strength is quite the sight as she glides across the floor elegantly and fiercely while on pointe.
From there, a bevy of women come across the screen for the remainder of the 4-minute video. Notable appearances from Rashida Jones, Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross, Yara Shahidi, Zoe Saldana, Jourdan Dunn, Tiffany Haddish and Leticia Wright.
In this song and video, Drake is paying homage to the strong women who have to be “nice for what?” to men.
He’s effectively praising women for doing so much, for handling their business and taking care of others.
Drake acknowledging that women shouldn’t have to be “nice” is him acknowledging that men often demand so much from women and that dichotomy is often imbalanced.
It’s nice to see a man go off about girl power and truly provide a nice representative piece starring so many amazing women.
The song features Ex-Factor by Lauren Hill, which was released in 1998.
While many artists are taking to surprise releases and reveals of their music, Drake actually teased this song and video when he made a surprise appearance at Majid Jordan’s show in his hometown of Toronto on Thursday of this week.
He said a new single would be released the next night. Very late yesterday night the video for “Nice For What” hit the internet to immediate fanfare and praise.
