President Donald Trump is doing what he does best — take credit for things that are making headlines.
Earlier today, Vice President Mike Pence walked out of the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers game.
It was not an ordinary game, millions of fans gathered at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and in front of their TV/computer screens to watch Peyton Manning’s number 18 get retired during halftime.
Angered by the fact that multiple players from both teams decided to kneel during the National Anthem, Trump’s VP and his wife, Karen, left the game before it even started.
The former governor of Indiana issued a tweet about his exit that read: “I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.”

A few minutes later, the vice president posted a lengthier statement on the matter.
He wrote: “I left today’s Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem. At a time when so many Americans are inspiring our nation with their courage, resolve and resilience, now, more than ever, we should rally around our Flag and everything that unites us. While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I don’t think it’s too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem. I stand with President Trump, I stand with our soldiers, and I will always stand for our Flag and our National Anthem.”
Trump was quick to take credit via a tweet where he explained that he was the one who asked Pence to exit early.
The billionaire wrote: “I asked @VP Pence to leave stadium if any players kneeled, disrespecting our country. I am proud of him and @SecondLady Karen.”
A fan told Trump: “We were proud to stand – with all our @Colts – for our soldiers, our flag, and our National Anthem.”
Another added: “Love the statement by our great VP, Mike Pence! Veterans & the Military do not like watching anyone disrespect our Flag, Anthem, & Country.”
Members of the media are adamant that this is just a stunt from the White House to make waves and continue to divide and conquer.
Elizabeth Landers explained: “Pooler @VaughnHillyard asked to go into the stadium with @VP (as is pool’s duty) but held in vans and told @VP may leave game early.”
Anti-Trump commenters bashed his administration.
One shared: “Holy [email protected]!!!! And they’re even lying on SUNDAY! The Lord’s Day! #FakeChristians #Watchlightning @VP @SecondLady”
A second one stated: “I think they will manage to limp along without you. Ratings holding steady this season and up for prime time games.”
To kneel or not to kneel, what say you on the controversy?
