When we thought that China and Taiwan would be the only countries where Donald Trump decides to break foreign policy normalcy, there it is again – a new controversial statement was made, this time about political action in the Philippines,
According to reports, the President-elect had a “very engaging, animated” conversation with the leader of the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte on the phone on Friday.
Considering that the two leaders are usually perceived as somewhat similar in their policies and controversial statements, the seven minute phone call must’ve been filled with reassurance and an ego boost for both of them, not that they need it.
The Filipino president has even said many controversial things, including a statement about former President Barack Obama, being the “son of a whore.”
However, perhaps the most shocking is Duterte’s stance on the drug wars and capital punishment.
In an effort to fight the drug lords in his country, the Filipino president has advocated for extrajudicial killings. Duterte has gone so far that he even organized a campaign this year in which he encouraged the police as well as civilians to kill drug users, or even those only suspected of substance abuse. That’s crazy!
The president even swore to kill thousands of drug suspects arrested in the present. Obviously, the encouragement to purposeless and unfair violence has attracted a lot of international judgment.
Donald Trump, on the other hand, allegedly thinks Duterte is doing the right thing, telling him on the phone that he is conducting his drug hunt “the right way.”
In a video released on Saturday, the Filipino president shared what their conversation was about and Trump’s stance on the whole issue, saying:
“[Trump] was quite sensitive also to our worry about drugs. And he wishes me well… in my campaign and he said that… we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way. He was wishing me success in my campaign against the drug problem.”
Duterte has admitted before that he is “happy to slaughter” three million substances users, he himself comparing his anti-drug campaign to that of Adolf Hitler during the Holocaust.
Trump reinforced the beliefs of such a man? Our America is turning into a scarier place by the day.
