While Megyn Kelly might not be aware of it, her former nemesis and Today co-host Matt Lauer worked behind the scenes to make sure NBC rapidly fired her.
Lauer and Kelly were never close pals, and that was confirmed after he was booted from the morning show and accused of sexual assault.
Kelly destroyed Lauer after he got axed, and he was delighted to get some revenge after the blackface controversy made headlines.
A source spoke to Life & Style and explained: “Matt contacted his old cronies at NBC within minutes of Megyn’s catastrophic Oct. 23 blackface comments and had a hand in her show’s cancellation. It’s sweet revenge for Matt after Megyn repeatedly criticized him and focused on his bad behavior. Now her scandal has taken the ‘most hated person in broadcasting’ spotlight off of him.”
The insider went on to reveal: “Matt hopes to get back on the air in some form at NBC. They’re still in discussions with some very exciting possibilities. Even Matt’s name has come up in whispered conversations.”
Kelly did apologize for her remarks by saying: “One of the wonderful things about my job is that I get the chance to express and hear a lot of opinions. Today is one of those days where listening carefully to other points of view, including from friends and colleagues, is leading me to rethink my views. I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep.”
The former Fox News darling continued: “I’ve never been a ‘pc’ kind of person — but I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age. Particularly on race and ethnicity issues which, far from being healed, have been exacerbated in our politics over the past year. This is a time for more understanding, love, sensitivity, and honor, and I want to be part of that. I look forward to continuing that discussion.”
With Kelly out the door at Today, some believe that The Voice coach and singer Kelly Clarkson might take her spot.
It is also being claimed that NBC veterans — Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford — have plans to take over her 9 a.m. hour on the morning program.
Al Roker could replace Kelly in the third hour of Today while some fans are begging Tamron Hall to come back.
Who do you think should replace Kelly?
