DeWanda Wise revealed today that she wouldn’t have a starring role in the upcoming Captain Marvel flick. Back in January of this year, fans were thrilled following the announcement of her involvement, a collaboration which would mark her transition into major Hollywood films.
Yesterday, DaWanda took to Instagram to state that she couldn’t work on the upcoming movie because of her conflicting work schedule.
Wise is scheduled to appear in Spike Lee’s Netflix series; She’s Gotta Have It, a production in which she stars as the lead actress. She wrote on her account that the rumors were “true,” and would no longer appear in the Marvel movie.
After she realized she could no longer be in the film, she felt “devastated,” but now feels a lot better. DaWanda was able to see the silver lining of the situation, considering in 2016, she didn’t even get movie offers, in fact, she had to work extremely hard to get opportunities.
Reportedly, Captain Marvel will have Brie Larson star as the title character, and will also feature Hollywood juggernauts including Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Jude Law.
For further background, DaWanda is just beginning to make a name for herself in the scene. She grew up in Jessup, Maryland, Woodlawn, Laurel, and Baltimore.
While in high school, DaWanda thought she wanted to be a therapist, but after taking a few courses, she decided it was a bad idea.
In her final year in high school, her theatre director offered her a part in a play instead of serving time in detention, for a transgression which is unknown. Fortunately, she discovered her passion and natural talent for acting and she went on to graduate from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University with a bachelor’s degree.
