Joseph Mascolo, or better known by his millions of fans, Stefano DiMera has died at the age of 87. According to reports, Mascolo suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. He will be missed by family, friends, and his millions of fans. He was married to wife, Pat Mascolo for 11 years. Mrs. Mascolo had this to say about his passing, “Joseph was a big ol’bear with a puppy dog heart. I’m so blessed to have had these many years with him. I will miss him every day.”
Although he had roles on “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Gangster Chronicles,” All in the Family,” “Kojak,” and more, his beloved role that he would always return to was his beloved character ‘Stefano DiMera” on “Days of Our Lives.” And, although he played the main villain on the show, he was a very nice person in real life. He and Kristian Alfonso, who played Hope Brady on ‘Days,’ were actually best friends in real life. On the show, they were always at each other’s throats and were mortal enemies. So much that she is the one who killed him off of the show for good this time before he died in real life.
Mascolo got his start with ‘Days’ when the writer of the show, Pat Faulken-Smith noticed him on the mini-series, ‘The Gangster Chronicles.” This is when she created the evil of villain of the show, Stefano DiMera in 1982. Mascolo played the role of the evil Stefano since 1982; no one else could do it justice like he did!
Joseph Mascolo was born in West-Hartford, Connecticut in 1929. He actually started his career as a classical musician and ended up with a scholarship to the University of Miami. Although he was on the brink of earning an acceptance of a scholarship to Fulbright, where he would have studied to become an orchestral conductor, he declined the scholarship and pursued acting instead. He was trained to be an actor by legendary acting coach, Stella Adler who trained him in New York.
Mascolo is survived by his wife, his son, Peter; his stepdaughter, Laura; a sister, Marie; along with five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He will be missed by everyone!
