Dave Franco revealed that playing a heroin junkie in the Netflix drama, 6 Balloons, was a lot more challenging than initially expected. The brother of James Franco stated in a new interview that it put unnecessary strain on his marriage to Alison Brie.
The 32-year-old actor explained that his most recent role is much different from the comedic ones of the past. He said, “that in and of itself was a huge draw for me.”
Franco said the purpose of his latest movie is to show audiences he’s capable of doing something other than comedy. As you may know, his older brother, James, has successfully made the transition between comedy and drama as well, including in films such as Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, 127 Hours, and This Is The End.
According to his wife, Brie, he inadvertently “brought the role” home with him from work sometimes, something which she didn’t particularly like, for more than one reason.
Brie told Franco that he was a buzzkill because the part had clearly sullied his mood. In addition to the mental transformation, Franco explained he had to lose around 25 pounds to more closely resemble a heroin addict, similar to what Christian Bale endured for The Machinist.
The physical transformation took a toll not only on his body but his mental health. Franco said that he even hurt his knee from all of the running he did.
And how did he prepare? Dave said he had to watch documentaries on what its like to be a heroin addict every single day, so the fact he still has friends through all of that is a testament to their strength. Franco admitted the last year was difficult for his wife and friends.
