Counting On star Kendra Duggar gave birth to her first child – a son named Garrett – on June 8th, and the 19-year-old is now opening up about her difficult labor and delivery. During last week’s special Joe and Kendra’s First Baby, the new mom talked about her husband, Joseph Duggar, rushing her to the hospital.
As OK! Magazine reports, viewers watched the drama unfold leading up to Garrett’s birth, but before it was time for the baby to arrive, Kendra revealed some shocking news – her mom Christina was pregnant with her eighth child.
“We found out that my mom was expecting about a month ago,” Kendra said. “I think this has definitely been really interesting because we’ve been able to share a lot of things that we didn’t get to share before, so I feel like we’ve become even more like friends. And I guess our relationship has gone more to a different level, I guess.”
Such a joy welcoming Garrett Duggar into the family! Now you can watch Joe and Kendra welcome their son to the world. Tune in July 30th for the season premiere of #CountingOn! Once Kendra’s labor started, her husband had trouble watching his wife go through the pain. About six hours in, Joe rushed Kendra to the hospital, and they arrived around 5:00 a.m. Then, the doctor broke her water while she gasped that she felt “so bad” and she could “hardly breathe.”
Hours later, Kendra finally started to push, and baby Garrett arrived. Joseph said that they decided on that name Garrett because it was for a “strong leader.” Kendra added that when you see the baby, it is a miracle and hard to believe.
The couple – who got married last September – decided they wanted to keep fans up to date on what’s going on in their lives, so they recently started their own website. But, the new parents shocked some fans when they read the “about” section.

Both Joseph and Kendra claimed that they didn’t always believe in Jesus, and even though they both grew up in large fundamentalist Christian families, they had doubts. Joseph wrote that there were times when he was a teenager that he thought he might not be a Christian. Instead, he thought he was just “going through the motions” and wasn’t truly saved. But, when he was 17, he really started to examine his faith.
Kendra wrote that she first expressed her faith in Jesus at the age of four but didn’t truly understand it all until she was 15. It wasn’t until then that she understood Christianity and put her faith in Jesus.
Many Counting On fans didn’t think it was possible for anyone in the Duggar family to doubt their faith, but they found it refreshingly honest to hear Kendra Caldwell and Joseph Duggar’s struggles.
Season eight of Counting On premieres July 30th on TLC.
