Counting On star Joy-Anna Duggar celebrated her 21st birthday last weekend exactly how you would expect her to – without alcohol. Duggar reached the milestone on October 28th, and she enjoyed a big dinner with her family and friends sans beer, wine, or cocktails.
“Happy birthday to my Joy Joy buddy,” wrote Joy-Anna’s big sister Jill on Instagram. “LOVE you and so happy we got to celebrate together the other day! Hope your day is splendid!” Jill captioned a pic of her and Joy-Anna standing under birthday balloons, with one big one in the shape of a 21.
There were a few fans who asked why we didn’t see any red solo cups in the pic. But other Duggar superfans quickly let them know that the family doesn’t drink alcohol. One fan claimed that the family is so conservative that they believe Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into grape juice, not wine.
We don’t know if that is true, but the Duggars are known for their strict rules that include no dancing, no TV or secular movies, no front hugging with the opposite sex, and for wearing extremely modest clothing. According to In Touch Weekly, Jill once explained why the family doesn’t bust a move.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily a rule,” Jill clarified. “We don’t want to stir up desires, just different things that, um, cannot be… righteously fulfilled, that cannot be, um, I don’t know, so, anyway, our family has chosen not to dance.”
But, surprisingly, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger have all admitted to drinking alcohol before, but it wasn’t on purpose. Jill says that the family is heavily involved in politics, and sometimes when they attend “fancy, ritzy” events, they sometimes get served what they think is punch, but it ends up being something like champagne.
In addition to her family, Joy-Anna’s good friend Carlin Bates also joined the party, and the Bringing Up Bates star posted a pic of the two friends on her Instagram Stories. Family friend Sierra Jo Dominguez also posted a pic of the birthday party full of sisters, girlfriends, and babies.
Side note – Jana was wearing pants in the pic!
But, some fans weren’t impressed with the party. A few thought a 21st birthday party with balloons and food only appeared to be “lame.” Others pointed out that Joy-Anna Duggar was much younger than they thought. Since she is married with a baby, it was shocking too many that she was only 21. One fan even added a facepalm emoji to their comment.
New episodes of Counting On will return to TLC in 2019.
