Thirteen Reasons Why may have won a Golden Globe and been nominated for multiple awards, but not everyone thinks the show should be on the air. Season two of the teen drama that tackles controversial issues returned to Netflix on May 18, but not everyone is giving the series positive reviews. While 13 Reasons Why season one was met with controversy due to the subject matter and an explicit suicide scene that caused some psychologists to state it showed taking one’s life in a glamorous fashion, season two has been met with a different type of criticism.
Though season two opened with a warning that the show might not be appropriate for certain viewers, the Parents Television Council still wants it canceled.
The Council issued an urgent warning to parents saying that due to a graphic rape scene that involved a broom handle, Netflix should pull the entire program.
The bullying act led to the character plotting a school shooting.

Parents Television president Tim Winter released the following statement to his supporters.
“Netflix has delivered a ticking time bomb to teens and children who watch ’13 Reasons Why.’ The content and thematic elements of the second season are even worse than we expected. We would have liked to have 13 reasons for hope and redemption following the graphic suicide of the lead female teen character, but rather than providing a path forward, the season only provides cause for despondency.”
Though the Parents Television Council isn’t alone with their concerns, there are some people who believe the call for cancellation is because male on male sexual abuse is depicted.
It’s too early to know if 13 Reasons Why will be renewed for a third season. There are many people, like the Parents Television Council, calling on Netflix to permanently end the series, but this was the case after the first season. For many viewers, the show is simply too graphic and doesn’t address teen issues in the most appropriate manner.
If Netflix renews 13 Reasons Why showrunner Katharine Langford will not return.
What do you think of the controversy surrounding the show? Have you watched 13 Reasons Why? Do you think Netflix should renew the series for a third season or cancel it?
