Christina Aguilera is not afraid to break industry expectations. The singer has reinvented herself many times, and for the cover of her new album, appropriately titled Liberation, she appeared in a black and white pic with no makeup on.
During an interview for Cosmopolitan, Aguilera explained that ‘I still love getting glammed up, but I want to show imperfections on this go-round. It’s scary, but I’m up for the challenge. You can’t tell me something I haven’t already heard about myself anyway.’
She went on to talk about the way she used to be portrayed on TV and how that affected her.
‘It’s hard to hear yourself being called names. I remember being hurt by commercials on MTV, pitting [Britney Spears] as the good girl and me as the bad one. It’s like, if I am going to be demure and innocent, that is OK. But if I am going to just be myself, I’m trouble,’ Aguilera told the news outlet.
Speaking of her getting bare in pics in the literal sense of the word as well, Christina made it very clear that she has no regrets because the female body is beautiful and not an object of ownership for men.
‘I love the female body, and I think it’s something to be proud of, not something that men should dictate ownership of. ‘Dirrty’ was extremely controversial at the time, but it would be nothing now. I hope I paved the way and helped set the ground rules that women can be any version of themselves they wanna be…and proud of it.’
Speaking of, she explained that she never felt like using fellow male stars to further her career and why she’d never do it.
‘There’s gotta be something wrong with you if you want to be in this business. I mean, hi! I definitely have my issues. I think that I can only handle one [star] in the relationship, and I need to be it.’
