In a cover story for Billboard, Charlie Puth opened up about his short fling with Selena Gomez. In the February 3rd issue, the 26-year-old pop star spoke about their collaboration in 2016 for the track, “We Don’t Talk Anymore” and how their romance went down.
When discussing the song, Puth said it was basically about unreciprocated love. When he found out his care wasn’t appreciated, he ended it. Without directly stating it, Charlie implied his tracks, “Attention,” and “How Long,” were inspired by his brief stint with Selena.
Puth said he doesn’t like to tell the whole world about his relationships, but the only way a song such as that can be so authentic is if there was something else happening behind the curtain.
The track characterized that fact. It was very short-lived but had a tremendous impact on him. Charlie stated, “it messed me up.”
However, admittedly, before getting involved, he knew what he was getting himself into. Charlie said his feelings at the time were like a mix-mash of emotions and very confusing to deal with.
The singer admitted he was very emotionally “mixed up” after they collaborated. Despite his feelings, Charlie said it was a great experience to work with Selena and he is always happy to sing it, even though it was inspired by a lot of turmoil.
Thankfully, he moved on, and on his new recording, Voicenotes, he created much “happier memories.” The singer stated his other album, Nine Track Mind, was rushed and sounded a lot like nails on a chalkboard. Since then, Selena has dated Abel Tesfaye, AKA The Weeknd, and recently went back to Justin Bieber despite her mother’s best wishes.
