Marvel’s best and brightest superheroes were left in a bad place at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. With the Infinity Gauntlet in hand, Thanos (Josh Brolin) literally killed off half of the life in the universe, including many of the Avengers themselves.
While the future looks bleak, the after-credits scene offered a ray of hope in the form of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) sending a mysterious text for help. We don’t actually see Captain Marvel’s name on Fury’s phone, but the symbol made it pretty clear it was her.

With Brie Larson set to play the female superhero in next year’s Captain Marvel, the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, revealed that she will play a much larger role in the next Avengers than anyone expected.
“She is more powerful than any character we’ve introduced thus far,” Feige teased.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Feige explained how Fury knew the Avengers needed help defeating Thanos, which is why he texted Captain Marvel of all people. Feige also said that Captain Marvel will shift the balance of power in favor of the Avengers. He did not go into any details on how she will help, but it sounds like Thanos is in for a big surprise.
Captain Marvel is not scheduled for release until next year. The movie is set back in the 1990s and reveals how Fury and Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, originally met. Back then, Fury had both of his eyes and was working his way up the ladder with S.H.I.E.L.D. He also had never met an alien from another planet, so working with Captain Marvel opened his eyes to the truth.

While we don’t know much else about the film, the movie will set up Captain Marvel’s story and transition her to star in the next Avengers.
Given how things ended with Thanos, the Avengers could definitely use her help.
Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8, 2019.
