Body image issues are no small thing to contend with for any individual. It becomes all the more consuming and challenging when you’re in the public eye. Just ask Riverdale actress Camila Mendes who has recently pledged that she is completely done with being held captive by a specific diet.
While food and nutrition and appearance are huge driving factors in Hollywood, the actress may be new to the scene but has been dealing with these struggles on her own since she was a little girl.
So much, in fact, that she actually suffered from an eating disorder.
Disordered eating can look like many different things depending on the sufferer. Mendes says that she became really obsessed with dieting.
She was becoming so preoccupied with it that she started to feel like she had to diet and that when she stopped, she would immediately start gaining weight, which she had an intrinsic fear of.
Mendes reveals that she’s done a tremendous job of surrounding herself with support and people who will uplift her when she’s having struggles with specific food choices or having a bad day.
She says that her best friends really help give her perspective and let her know that a less than healthy food choice isn’t the end of the world and that it happens.
The actress admits that there is a specific type of fear of losing control that comes with having had an eating disorder in the past.
It’s a type of psychological stronghold mentality that can be so difficult to break free from.
Mendes says that when she wants to eat dessert, she does and that the boundaries she sets for herself in regards to food are much more fluid than any type of diet would allow.
If she chooses to eat chocolate cake one day, then she won’t the next day but she doesn’t follow some specific and strict guidelines when it comes to what she eats in a day.
Mendes says that the world, and the industry, needs to start abiding by the truth that there are so many types of bodies and beauty out there and no one needs to fit into some specific mold.
