Runaway teen drama Riverdale has introduced many young actors and actresses into the spotlight, with near-instant fame, notoriety and potentially even more roles presented to them. In the age of the internet, however, this can also bring up old antics and hurtful practices of young adults who grew up with smartphones and social media.
This is what occurred with Charles Melton, who plays Reggie, on the hit teen drama. Tweets have been uncovered that the actor posted back in 2011 and 2012 where he said some really cruel and hurtful things to someone regarding their weight and body.
In recent years, there has been a much-needed push that centers around others not being shamed for their bodies and how they look.
Body positivity and fat acceptance have made real waves in the past 5-8 years.
Once these tweets were uncovered, Melton issued a public apology denouncing this past behavior as unacceptable.
His current co-star, Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica, has been particularly vocal about her past struggles with an eating disorder.
In order to practice more healthy eating habits, she’s vowed to do away with dieting as she finds it too restrictive as it can lead to unnecessary compulsions.
Recently Mendes revealed that Melton apologized to her personally for his hurtful comments even though they weren’t directed at her nor did he even know her at the time.
Mendes explains that Melton isn’t actually a bad person but took part in behavior that was hurtful and wrong, yet he’s been able to grow from it and he truly feels differently now.
Mendes says Melton was devastated and that he is so sorry for those hurtful and ugly actions he took part in.
She is clear that she doesn’t condone his hurtful words but that she knows he truly feels terrible and has grown since exhibiting such behavior.
