In 2003, Britney Spears and Madonna famously kissed while on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York City.
It was a massive media spectacle, especially considering gay marriage still hadn’t been legalized in most American states. For several weeks, the tabloids talked about it, as it was a truly unique performance at the time.
And there’s no disputing that Britney remembers it. On the 23rd of July, Spears returned to the venue and reminisced on that controversial moment between herself and Madonna. The 36-year-old said to her audience, “this is our favorite city, the Big Apple! How are you guys doing?” Check out the tweet below to hear Britney addressing the notorious kiss.
During the night of the infamous smooch, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears paid homage to Madonna’s 1984 track, “Like A Virgin,” and during the song, “Hollywood,” Britney and Madonna leaned over to each other and kissed.

After the crowd gasped, the camera cut to Britney’s ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, who had a shocked look on his face. Afterward, the singer kissed Christina too.
In an interview with MTV News later in the year, Britney said, “No one slipped anybody the tongue.” Tongue or no tongue, the spectacle shocked the world. These days, Britney continues to impress her audience, but with more traditional concerts.
Britney is currently in the middle of her Piece Of Me tour, with the performance at the Radio City Music Hall being the most recent.
On Sunday, she’s finishing up the dates of the North American leg, before she packs up her things and heads to Europe. Britney, for the last four years, has performed at her own residency in Las Vegas: also called Piece Of Me.
During a chat with Entertainment Tonight earlier in the month, Britney said that her performances are all back to back. She doesn’t have much time to rest, and “It’s a workout in itself.” The singer explained that her tour keeps her strong.
