Honestly, if you blink, you will miss it. So, pay attention, because, for a split second, Brad Pitt returns to the big screen with a brief cameo in Deadpool 2. The much-anticipated sequel hits theaters this weekend, and the self-referential a**hole once again winks at the audience with jabs at Marvel movies and Ryan Reynolds’ career choices, plus a few wild celebrity cameos.
In the film, audiences catch up with the cancer-patient-turned-unkillable-reluctant-hero Wade Wilson as he deals with the death of his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), and he does that by peeing on himself while sitting on a barstool and then blowing himself up. However, he finds the will to fight again when the call comes to deal with Russell Collins, a mutant teenager from New Zealand. And, along the way, we see some very familiar faces.
According to W Magazine, Deadpool assembles a squad he calls X-Force to rescue the wayward teen, and among them is Vanisher, a mutant with the special power of invisibility. That means you literally can’t see him – until things go horribly wrong.
Deadpool plans a heist that requires the squad jumping out of a helicopter during high winds, and it results in the graphic death of almost every member of the X-Force. Vanisher ends up landing on and getting electrocuted by a telephone wire, and for a second, he flickers on the screen. And, there is no mistaking that Vanisher is Pitt.
In true Deadpool form, it is a joke about a joke. Vanisher being invisible is funny enough, but the fact that he is one of the world’s most famous actors proves to be icing on the cake. As it turns out, there is a story behind the casting.
At one time, rumors swirled that Pitt was going play the part of Cable, the Deadpool antagonist. Josh Brolin ended up landing the role, but that is because things didn’t work out with Pitt schedule-wise. Director David Leitch said that they had a great meeting with Pitt and he was incredibly interested in the project. And, even though they couldn’t work things out for the part of Cable, Brad Pitt was such a fan that he agreed to lend his image for a goof.
Other cameos in the film include James McAvoy and the current X-Men cast. Hugh Jackman even manages to make an appearance as Wolverine, kind of.
Deadpool 2 hits theaters nationwide on May 19th.
