Black Panther actress Danai Gurira was in attendance at Alfre Woodard’s 9th Annual Sistahs Soirée yesterday, and of course, she opened up about the incredible success of the superhero film! ‘It is not something you can ever anticipate. What has been beautiful is really connecting with people who are resonating with it, who are even healing sometimes and edifying, and they are finding out they want to reclaim things and re-realize things,’ she stated.
Indeed, the latest Marvel movie seems to be a game changer in Hollywood representation, and it definitely had as much social meaning as it was fun to watch!
Danai went on to say that ‘You start having these beautiful conversations with people who watched it and want to talk. Just seeing that sort of impact with something I get to be a part of [is incredible]’
As for her co-stars, the actress revealed that after being together for months on the press tour, she is yet to reunite with them.
‘We are kind of scattered. We are all over the place in different places now, but it’d be really exciting to reconnect,’ she said.
But the fact that they are all busy doing their own thing right now didn’t stop Gurira from sharing a really wild story.
‘Lupita and I were in South Africa. We were there the day [the movie] opened here, and we had an amazing time. But then I took a few days before I came back.’
‘It was kinda like a safari lodge place, and I wanted a balcony. So I was up on the 10th floor on the balcony, more like a hotel. Then, I am, like, so tired. I am sleeping in the afternoon, taking a nap and some crazy stuff starts happening on my balcony, and it is a big ol’ baboon! And I am just fighting to keep the door shut and calling security, going, ‘Help me!’’ she recalled.
That sounds like an unforgettable experience!
‘I do not have my spear, y’all!’ she joked, adding that ‘it was definitely a real moment in the midst of it all.’
