‘Live By Night’ is officially a box office flop since it debuted in theaters last December, and its failure has resulted in a lot of financial loses for the studio.
According to the US trade magazine Variety, the gangster film for which Ben Affleck took on the roles of director, producer, writer and lead actor has led to face heavy financial losses of $75 million.
Released last December, the movie based on Dennis Lehane’s novel has amassed just over $6 million on the planet. This is much less than the $65 million it cost to produce. And it was not counting the tens of millions of US dollars that had to be disbursed to promote it.
‘Live By Night’ is currently sitting at 32% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In short, it is far from the successes of the Oscar-winning drama Argo (2012) and The Town (2010) — both directed by and starring Affleck.
Live by Night takes place during the 1920s in Boston, a time associated with prohibition. The criminal Joe Coughlin took advantage of this period to become a major gangster. The film also stars Elle Fanning, Chris Cooper, Sienna Miller and Zoe Saldana.
Affleck’s next big project is to direct a standalone Batman film. A spokesman for Warner Bros. declined to comment!
