Season 22 of The Bachelor is almost here, and Arie Luyendyk Jr. is opening up about his experience on the dating show. It has been a while since he appeared on Emily Maynard’s season of The Bachelorette, so he was a little rusty when it came to dating on reality television. So, what was his strategy for finding true love this time around?
According to TV Cheat Sheet, Luyendyk revealed that one mistake he didn’t want to make was to prioritize chemistry over everything else and put too much stock in looks and attraction.
“I think my game plan was not to lead with chemistry. I think in the past I’ve done that before and I think as a man it’s easy to do that. Also for me, I just really tried to envision how that person would fit into my regular life and if I could fit into their life,” said Luyendyk.
When it comes to finding love, he also doesn’t want to focus on all the drama on the show. He says he didn’t get to see everything that was happening in the house, and instead only heard stories from the women. So, he tried to cast the talk aside and give the woman in front of him the benefit of the doubt.
Luyendyk also admitted that dating hasn’t been easy since the last time he was on the show. He said he realized that he hasn’t been in love since he was on The Bachelorette.
Hollywood Life reports that it wasn’t easy for Luyendyk to get over Maynard after she broke his heart on the show. He admitted that it took time for him to recover from that relationship, but now he is ready to get married and to start a family and settle down.
When it came to getting advice about picking the right woman, Luyendyk turned to former contestant Sean Lowe, who successfully got married from being on the show. He told the former race car driver that he needed to be present in every moment and make the person who you are talking to feel like they are the only one there. Luyendyk said that was an important piece of advice and he wanted to make sure he was a good listener.
For the new Bachelor, age was not a factor when it came to handing out roses. Luyendyk is 36, and most of this season’s contestants are in their mid-twenties. But, he says it is all about the person and how mature they are.
Luyendyk did reveal that he told more than one woman that he loved her, and he didn’t know he could love more than one person at a time. He said he didn’t expect that, but he was glad he left himself open and got to have that experience.
