Angela Lansbury is coming out to clarify her initial comments after her interview garnered a substantial amount of backlash from the media and citizens alike. In a statement to People Magazine, the 92-year-old actress wrote that there is “no excuse whatsoever” for men to harass women in an abusive manner whether it be sexual or purely out of malice.
Angela said she is “devastated” that people would think of her having the capacity to think otherwise. She said, “those who have known the quality of my work” understand her intentions as a Women’s rights advocate.
Following the allegations against Hollywood figures such as Harvey Weinstein, the actress spoke with reporters from The Ratio Times about the incidents.
She said there are “two sides to this coin” and women have to “own up to the fact that women, since time immemorial, (they) have gone out of their way to make themselves attractive.”
Lansbury said it has “backfired” on women in general and “here we are today.” She added, “we must sometimes take the blame.”
In response to her comments, the Rape Crisis England And Wales center for women released a statement stating that the idea that men rape women because of their attractiveness is a myth. The real purpose of rape is for “power and control” and has little to do with sexual desire.
They added that it’s insulting to anyone to suggest their willpower is easily circumvented by the way a woman presents herself. The statement went on to say that “unless we acknowledge” the fact that it’s never the victim’s fault, sexual assault and rape will continue to go on.
